Abandoned illegal fishing equipments in Valencia, Ormoc City recovered

Ormoc City Police Station 2 (OCPS2) police personnel while conducting police visibility in Brgy. San Jose, Valencia this city were able to recover abandoned illegal fishing paraphernalia, Friday, 16 August 2013.
Recovered in said barangay were fishing implements: Dry Cell Battery and one (1) Unit Improvised Electro Fishing Equipment found nearby a swamp in the barangay San Jose.
Police report disclosed that they received an information of about two (2) unidentified male persons who were engaged in electro-fishing in barangay San Jose prompting OCPS2 police to proceed to the area and recovered the facilities already abandoned. Police brought the abandoned fishing materials to the Ormoc City Police Station 2 for safekeeping.
“Illegal fishing destroys the natural breeding ground of fishes, says Ormoc City Police Office city director Police Senior Superintendent Elizar Patano Egloso, we must protect our water resources.
Police Community Relations, chief Police Superintendent Ma. Elma B. Delos Santos expressed her appreciation for the timely report of the activity and added: “Electro-fishing endangers very small aquatic species not yet fit for human consumption. Illegal fishing of the sort deprives our water resources fishes the right time for harvest.
Aside from the fact that electro-fishing is a life hazard, it endangers human electrocution particularly unwary children frequenting streams, ponds and swamps to play and bathe. It becomes a criminal act that is demandable and punishable and can send the offender to prison, “she said.
Finally, should there be similar activity or suspicious persons observed in the community engaged in illegal fishing they must immediately be reported to nearest police station or call OCPO HOTLINE Number 255-2232, PSSUPT Egloso concluded.
