'Yolanda' photos win international awards - ABS CBN News

MANILA -- International coverage of the destruction wrought by typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) resulted in photojournalists winning two major awards in the 2014 World Press Photo awards.

The winners were announced on Friday.

Named first prize for spot news/singles is a photo by AFP's Philippe Lopez. His photo shows survivors of the typhoon during a religious procession in Tolosa, Leyte.

First prize in general news/stories went to a photo of Chris McGrath of Getty Images, highlighting the destroyed coastline in Tacloban City.

An international jury of leading professionals in the field of photojournalism worldwide served as judges.

They began judging the entries at the World Press Photo office in Amsterdam on February 1.

The prize-winning pictures will be presented in a year-long exhibition that will travel through more than 100 cities in over 45 countries, to start in Amsterdam in De Nieuwe Kerk on April 18, 2014.
