Velarde eyes medal in Asian schools chess

EIGHT-year-old Jerish Velarde will go all out for his final match today as he aims for a medal finish in the Open Under 9 category of the 11th Asian Schools Chess Championships in Singapore.

Velarde regained his footing following his victory over Sheng Feng Ng of Singapore in Round 8 that moved him back to the No. 4 spot. He is now a strong contender for the silver and bronze medal.

Six players are tied at the third to eighth places, including Velarde’s final round opponent, Anar Battulga of Mongolia.
