BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — Nineteen crew members of a commercial fishing vessel were apprehended for allegedly fishing illegally in the waters off Cauayan town in Negros Occidental at 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Records at the Capitol indicated that the crew of Fishing Boat Maricel, helmed by Captain Rodel Macasilhig, were arrested by Task Force Lawod of the provincial government at Barangay Isio of Cauayan.
The fishing boat, reportedly owned by Normandy Herado of Alim of Hinobaan town, was caught fishing using active gears in the Cauayan municipal waters.
Municipal Fisheries Ordinance and Republic Act 8550 prohibit the big fishing vessels from encroaching into the municipal waters within the 10-kilometer radius. Further, the fishing vessel allegedly employed unlicensed crew. — Marchel P. Espina (FREEMAN)
