Schoolmates of Irene Mae Alcobilla, the top-notcher of the 2014 Bar exams, rejoiced Thursday after learning she topped this year's batch.

Alcobilla's former teachers at the West Visayas State University described her as hard-working and determined to finish school, GMA Iloilo reported.

Irene graduated magna cum laude with a degree in Political Science in 2009, despite losing her mother and brother to Typhoon Frank in San Remigio, Antique in 2008.

At school, she became an active student leader, and studied law at San Beda College.

Professor Elfelda Ecube, one of Irene's former mentors, believes Irene's topping this year's exam is a reward for her sacrifice and hard work. — Joel Locsin/BM, GMA News
