Mandatory repatriation in Ebola-hit countries readied - Sun.Star

THE Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Sunday it is already preparing for the mandatory repatriation of Filipinos in Ebola-hit countries in West Africa.

These countries are Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, said DFA spokesperson Charles Jose.

“It follows that since we are pulling out our troops because of Ebola, we should also do the same for the rest of Filipinos there,” said Jose, referring to the government's announcement on Saturday that 115 peacekeepers from Liberia will be sent home as soon as possible because of the outbreak.

DFA records show there are 880 Filipinos in Guinea, 632 in Liberia, and 1,979 in Sierra Leone.

Last July, the DFA raised Crisis Alert Level 2 in Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia due to the worsening Ebola outbreak, which the World Health Organization already classified as a public health emergency of international concern.

This will go up to alert level 4 under the mandatory repatriation phase.

Ebola infections have reached 2, 615 while the death toll has gone up to 1,427 as of Friday, the WHO said. (HDT/Sunnex)
