Palace won't block Enrile motions for age, health-related 'considerations' - GMA News

Malacañang on Saturday said the government is not likely to block moves by the camp of Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile to seek slightly better conditions in detention if these are age- or health-related.

Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said President Benigno Aquino III already said this is not a matter of special treatment but consideration for Enrile's age and health condition.

“These things should be taken into consideration while he is in detention,” she said on government-run dzRB radio.

She added this is not so much “better treatment” than consideration for his present condition.

On Friday, Enrile surrendered to the Philippine National Police in Camp Crame after the Sandiganbayan ordered his arrest on graft and plunder charges stemming from the P10-billion pork barrel scam.

He was detained at the PNP General Hospital in Camp Crame on Friday night, after medical tests showed his blood pressure at 200 over 90.

The 90-year-old lawmaker is also suffering from a range of conditions including hypertension, diabetes, anemia and macular degeneration.

On Saturday, Enrile was brought to the Asian Eye Institute in Makati City to undergo a procedure on his right eye to address macular degeneration – a condition that could lead to blindness if not treated properly. — Joel Locsin /LBG, GMA News
