Enrile surrenders following Sandigan's arrest order. Senate Minority Leader Juan Ponce Enrile on Friday, July 4, arrives at Camp Crame in Quezon City shortly after the Sandiganbayan Third Division ordered his arrest in connection with the graft and plunder charges filed against him for allegedly pocketing kickbacks from his pork barrel. Senator Juan Ponce Enrile was brought back to his detention facility in Camp Crame after being brought to the Asian Eye Institute in Makati City early Saturday morning for a medical procedure.
According to a report on radio dzBB, the 90-year-old senator and his group left the Makati eye center past 7:40 a.m. and returned to Camp Crame.
In an interview, Enrile told reporters his right eye was treated to address macular degeneration, which if not treated properly could lead to blindness.
No relative was seen with Enrile in going to the Makati facility, the dzBB report said.
He, however, thanked the Philippine National Police for what he claimed as "courteous treatment" during his first night of detention at the PNP General Hospital in Camp Crame on Friday.
Enrile said he was treated well by the police after he surrendered at Camp Crame following the Sandiganbayan's order for his arrest over graft and plunder charges that stemmed from the alleged P10-billion pork barrel scam, the report said.
The dzBB report quoted Enrile's staff as saying his blood pressure as of early Saturday was 172 over 82, a slight improvement from the 200 over 90 readings shortly after he surrendered to the PNP late Friday.
On the other hand, the family of Enrile have requested that the result of the senator's medical checkup at the Asian Eye Institue early Saturday to be kept from the public, a report on GMA News TV's "News TV Live" quoted PNP spokesman Chief Supt. Reuben Sindac as saying.
Enrile was brought to the Asian Eye Institute early Saturday by a highly secure convoy, radio dzBB's Manny Vargas and Mao dela Cruz reported.
Earlier, Enrile's camp indicated he has an eye condition that could lead to blindness.
