MANDAUE CITY, Cebu – At least 100 houses were destroyed when a fire hit a congested residential area in Purok 2, barangay Bakilid, Cebu City Monday night.
The fire, which started at the house of Rodrigo Barangan, was raised to Task Force Alpha as it spread towards the nearby Purok 3, razing houses that were mostly made up of light materials.
A 60-year-old man was rushed to the hospital after he collapsed during the fire. No other casualties were reported in the fire.
SFO3 Roy Garcia, Mandaue City fire investigator, said the cause of the fire has not been established yet although witnesses said they heard a zapping sound from the house of Barangan before the fire.
Garcia said the blaze, tapped at 9 p.m., was raised to Task Force Alpha, prompting fire fighters from nearby towns and cities to respond. The Chinese Volunteer Fire Brigade also came in to help douse the blaze.
The fire investigator said firemen had a hard time penetrating the core of the fire because of narrow alleyways. The houses in the neighborhood were mostly made up of a mix of light materials and concrete.
Damage to property was pegged at between P400,000 and P500,000.
