Skater Michael Christian Martinez bows out of medal contention - DigitalJournal.com

Sochi - Michael Christian Martinez, the lone Filipino figure skater competing in Men's Singles in the XXII Olympic Winter Games (Sochi) 2014, performed impressively in the free skate competition Friday finishing third in his group with an overall score of 119.44.

But his best score in the game did not sustain his early lead as veteran Olympic skaters started to surpass his score as the competition progressed. The 17-year-old Filipino skater garnered a total score of 184.25 after adding the 64.81 points he got during the short program the day before. It was the best score in the first group of six performers, Martinez bowed out of the medal race after the entry of previous Olympic record holders that include Japan's Yuzuru Hanyu, who won the gold medal.

Patrick Chan of Canada got the silver medal while Denis Ten of Kazakhstan received for the bronze medal. Martinez performed to the popular song "Romeo and Juliet" as he made initial impression with media as well as the crowd watching at the Iceberg Skating Palace in Sochi, Russia. For his second entry, he performed to the tune of "Malaguena." There were 29 other skaters from 21 nations who are competing in the popular skating event. As a child, Martinez was asthmatic but managed to pursue his dream of becoming a world-class skater through constant practice, discipline and dedication to his craft. "I literally grew up in the hospital as I was very sick. I couldn't take up any sport. I tried outdoor sports when I was younger, but I easily got asthma attacks, so I stopped," Martinez recalled. Martinez hopes to improve his figure skating skills in preparation for the next Olympics competition.
