Power coop urged to provide Tacloban with street lights

THE Tacloban City Government is appealing to the Leyte 2 Electric Cooperative (Leyeco 2) to install street lights in the city even if the local government is yet to pay its due.
Lawyer Irene Chiu, executive assistant of Mayor Alfred Romualdez, admitted that the City Government has not paid its bill to Leyeco 2 since Typhoon Yolanda.
It was learned that the local government unit (LGU) owed the electric cooperative some P14 million.
Chiu said that currently, the local government is cash-strapped. With the lack of funds, they are constraint to prioritize basic services.
However, they are hoping that the National Government will soon download money intended for rehabilitation even as they also asked for fund augmentation from it.
The lawyers added it is the responsibility of the City Government to provide for the street lights. Majority of the street lights, she said, were also damaged by Yolanda.
As she asked for the understanding of the electric provider, she also hoped that Leyeco 2 will do something to restore the street lights.
At present, only street lights along the national highway and portion of the downtown area have been restored. (PNA)
