TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte, February 10 (PIA) – The Philippine Information Agency in Eastern Visayas in partnership with the private sectors, is set to launch the region-wide training of barangays on citizens journalism in order to empower the citizenry to report what is going on in their respective barangays.

The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines and the ABS-CBN’s Bayan Mo, Ipatrol Mo have graciously accepted to help the Philippine Information Agency Region 8 in its endeavor to strengthen the Community Development Information Officers program by including all the barangay, not only the municipalities in the Region.

NUJP’s Ms. Weng Paraan and ABS-CBN’s Carisa Manuel Pancho will be in Tacloban on February 12 in order to facilitate the training on citizens journalism which will include barangay officials and PIA information officers.

The idea behind citizen journalism is that people without professional journalism training can use the tools of modern technology and the global distribution of the Internet to create, augment or fact-check media on their own.

The training hopes to rekindle the love of country, municipality and barangay. As good citizens and leaders they must inform the good developments in their areas and also their concerns in the area.

They will be taught how to develop SMS, send photos and video clips to their Mayor, the PIA, the ABSCBN through the Bayan Ko Ipatrol Ko segment. After the training, the participants will be designated by PIA as barangay community development information officers.

For this training which is for free, only 75 participants have been selected. (PIA 8)
