NPA rebels slay soldier in South Cotabato clash



MANILA, Philippines - A member of the Philippine Army was killed in an encounter with New People's Army (NPA) rebels in Lake Sebu, South Cotabato on Thursday.


Capt. Alberto Caber, spokesperson of the Armed Forces' Eastern Mindanao Command, said the slain soldier was a member of th Army's 27th Infantry Batallion.


Caber said the soldier was slain in an encounter with the rebels at the boundary of Barangay Ned and Barangay Lampugon in Lake Sebu at around 2:25 p.m.


He said that the rebels were on a routine security patrol when they chanced upon a group of the NPA's extortion unit.


The soldier, who has yet to be identified by the military, was killed in the initial volley of gunfire from the rebels.
