Malaysia, Philippine Agree On Peaceful Settlement Of Disputes In West ... - Bernama

PUTRAJAYA, Feb 28 (Bernama)-- Malaysia and the Philippines agreed on the peaceful settlement of disputes in the West Philippine Sea and South China Sea, in accordance with the rule of law and United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), said Philippine President Benigno S. Aquino III.

At a joint press conference with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today, Aquino said as members of Asean, both countries believed their potential to prosper could only be fully realised in the international context where the rule of law was upheld.

"We believe that adherence to the rule of law, positive engagement and sincere dialogue are fundamental if we are to build a truly prosperous and peaceful Southeast Asia, where no one is left behind," he said.

To ensure security, he said both leaders had reviewed many aspects of defence relations, particularly the educational and training exchanges between the armed forces and defence officials, as well as continued joint training activities and intelligence exchange.

Aquino who is here on a two-day official visit, said both countries would be examining the progress of several initiatives and cooperation during the 8th Philippines-Malaysia Joint Commission Meeting, which would take place this year.

The president also thanked the Malaysian government for its effort to consolidate peace and development in Mindanao with recent gains in the peace talks with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). Malaysia has been the facilitator of the Mindanao peace process since 2001.

"The successful conclusion of the Mindanao peace process finds root in the determination of both our peoples to strengthen the foundations of peace and justice," he said.

Aquino also invited Malaysian companies to invest in Mindanao, as well as to develop the palm oil industry there.

"I discussed with the prime minister the economic gains of the Philippines and highlighted how Malaysia could play a more significant role as the Philippines treads the straight path to meaningful progress.

"We also invite Malaysia to work with us in developing the Philippine palm oil industry, among other sub-industries. This is an area that aims to open more doors of opportunities for growth for both our people," he added.

The president also praised Malaysia's commitment and contribution in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan.

"The Filipino people will never forget an act of kindness. On behalf of my countrymen, please accept my sincerest gratitude, Terima Kasih, Maraming Salamat (Thank You)," he said.
