The Bureau of Customs (BoC) yesterday seized 38 imported used cars from South Korea that came to the country through Port Irene in Santa Ana, Cagayan.
The 38 vehicles were part of the 800 secondhand cars that arrived in three batches. The first shipment consisted of 347 units and arrived last December 15, 2013. The second batch of 266 units arrived January 3 that was followed by the third batch consisting of 235 units that arrived last January 27.
According to the official BoC statement, the seized 38 units were imported by Fenix (CEZA) International, Inc. which is one of the two accredited used car importers at the Cagayan Special Economic Zone and Freeport (CSEZF).
The seizure of the imported used cars was based on the Executive Order 156 issued in 2002 by then President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
The law provides that for the vehicles to be taken out of the free port, it must have clearances from the BoC, the Bureau of Internal Revenue, and the Land Transportation Office (LTO). (Jenny Manongdo)
