Senator Jinggoy Ejercito Estrada distributed over 2,500 relief bags containing rice, canned goods, drinking water, medicines and the like to residents of Ormoc, Leyte affected by typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) on Tuesday. Estrada returned to the country last Sunday (November 17) after going to the United States on November 2 for a scheduled appointment with doctors to seek a second opinion on the medical condition of his wife, Precy.
The relief mission was conducted in the gymnasium of Barangay San Pablo, Simangan, Ormoc City where Estrada was assisted by Leyte 4th District Representative Lucy Torres-Gomez and Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama. Estrada assured that he will deliver more assistance, in form of food supplies and roofing materials, in the coming days in coordination with Congresswoman Torres-Gomez.
He also pledged to keep communication lines open with local government officials to coordinate his relief and rehabilitation efforts for the province. As for his reaction to the filing of new plunder charges last September by the Office of the Ombudsman, Estrada, in an interview with reporters, said he is ready to face them all. Estrada, Senate Minority Leader Juan Ponce Enrile and Senator Ramon "Bong" Revilla Jr. have been accused of benefiting from the controversial pork barrel scam.
“Puwede pa po tayong ngumiti. Habang may buhay, may pag-asa (I can still smile. When there is life, there is hope),” he said in a message addressed to the residents of Ormoc.
