Search for missing airplane called off - no trace

Socronio B. Dacillo, Jr., Biliran provincial disaster risk reduction and management officer, said they officially ended the search operation at 1:05 p.m. yesterday after rescuers found no traces of a plane crash. “Rescuers confirmed that there’s no plane crash incident after a thorough aerial and ground survey,” Mr. Dacillo told BusinessWorld in a cellphone interview.

Benlie Linde, operations officer of the Office of the Civil Defense regional office here, said that based on their coordination with the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines, all planes that took off from various airports last Tuesday have been accounted for. “No companies have claimed of missing planes. That strengthens our theory that the claim (of a plane crash) may not be true,” he said in a separate phone interview.

The search and rescue operation was mounted on Tuesday morning, after some residents of Barangay Imelda reported to Mayor Susan Parilla that a small plane had crashed and smoke was reportedly observed in the mountains, around 30 kilometers from Naval, capital of Biliran province. Mr. Dacillo said 51 rescuers from Ormoc City, Naval town, Philippine Army, Bureau of Fire Protection and Philippine National Police joined the search.

The Philippine Air Force Tactical Operations Group also conducted an aerial survey Tuesday afternoon.
