‘Metro Manila’ scores Bafta nod

INDEPENDENT film "Metro Manila" is nominated for the Foreign Language Film category of the 67th British Academy Film Awards (Bafta).
Written and directed by Englishman Sean Ellis, the Filipino-themed movie will compete against Joshua Oppenheimer's "The Act of Killing," Abdellatif Kechiche's "Blue Is The Warmest Colour," "The Great Beauty" by Paolo Serrentino, and "Wadjda" by Haifaa Al-Mansour.
Shot in the Philippines in 2011, the film centers on the life of Oscar Ramirez, played by Jake Macapagal, who brought his family in the nation's capital Metro Manila to escape their impoverished lives in the countryside.
The family will then fall victim to the dark side of the city. Ramirez will eventually get a job as an armored truck driver and will meet officer Ong, played by John Arcilla.
Before the Bafta nomination, "Metro Manila" bagged the Best British Independent Film trophy and Best Director recognition for Ellis at the 16th British Independent Film Awards.
It also won awards at the 2013 Sundance, Filfest Hamburg in Germany, and the Amazonas Film Festival.
Bafta ceremony is set on February 16 at the Royal Opera House in London and will be hosted by English comedian, actor, writer Stephen Fry.
