Here’s encouraging news for Southern Leytenos; last year we posted the lowest malnutrition rate in Eastern Visayas. Only 7.11% of the preschool children weighed were considered malnourished, while the Department of Education’s Southern Leyte Schools Division posted a 4.6% malnutrition rate for all school children in the province. The malnutrition rate was based on the weight of 41,298 preschool children aged 1-71 months old who posted an average malnutrition rate of only 7.11% in 2012.

She said of the total preschool children weighed only 450 of them were severely underweight while 2,490 were just underweight. While the DepEd here reported that out of 53,892 school children weighed only 316 school children were severely malnourished and 2,118 of them were just underweight. Rich said that the National Nutrition Council had set 10% malnutrition rate as the benchmark for measuring the rate of malnutrition in the country. While the same measurement was used by the Schools Provincial Division in checking the nutritional status of elementary school children from Kindergarten to Grade VI.
