MANILA, Philippines - Thousands of mangrove seedlings and propagules were planted on Valentine’s Day in Barangay San Manuel in Puerto Princesa City as part of the 12th year celebration of the “2014 Love Affair with Nature.”

The event, led by Puerto Princesa City Mayor Lucilo Bayron, was attended by groups from different sectors of society and members of the city council who conveyed their support to the environmental program of the local government.

“This project illustrates our commitment in the conservation and protection of the environment,” said Bayron who earlier officiated a mass wedding of 268 couples.

In his speech, Bayron pointed out how mangroves could help protect against storms, storm surges and tsunamis that may threaten the city.
